I liked a girl in my SS2 class back in 2004. She was new in school and all the guys had an eye for her and even girls were envious of her. She was beautiful and a brilliant student at that.

I had never had a girlfriend and thought she was out of my league and kept my distance. But she liked me too. I knew because she always wanted to borrow my notes or sit close to me or talk to me. So she liked me (I think) and I liked her (I knew) but the only problem was that my 15 year old self couldn’t fathom the idea of walking up to her and telling her my mind.

Never-be-afraid-to-sayWP

Society has told boys/men to take the lead so my love interest waited patiently for my “move” but none was forthcoming. In my hesitation, the most popular boy in class made his move. Let’s call him, Stephen. Stephen was pompous and full on himself and I was this timid boy who liked a girl but wasn’t brave enough to tell her.

A few years after we finished school, she traveled to the United States to finish her studies and we connected via Facebook. I wasn’t as timid as I was back then so we got talking. She told me about her feelings for me and how she prayed I told her how I felt after she gave me all the ‘green light’ permissible for a girl to give. We were like kids again but distance couldn’t let us initiate anything meaningful. A few years after she got married and is living happily in Trump’s America.

That moment taught me a valuable lesson about girls, love and life and that’s the fact that taking risks is a part and parcel of life, love and living.

Most people’s fear of failing makes them immune to trying at all so they don’t fail but in so doing, they remain on the same spot.

Love is risky. You might love and not be loved back in the same proportion. So should you not love at all?

Business is risky. You might get into business with someone with bad intentions and get duped. So should you not do business at all?

Getting a job is risky. You might get comfortable in a job and get sacked or retrenched the next minute. So should you not get a job at all?

Talking about your feelings is risky. You might have feelings for someone who doesn’t feel the same way. So should you not have feelings at all?

Flying is risky. The engine of the plane might fail or weather might cause havoc and the plane might crash. So should you not fly at all?

Motivational-Quote-Stay-Motivated

Childbirth is risky. There might be complications during childbirth and the child or the mother might die. So should we not give birth again?

Travelling is risky. You might be involved in an accident. So should we never travel again?

Life is risky folks. Everything in life is about taking risks. As a matter of fact, where you see yourself in future is a result of the risks you took today.

Denzel Washington once gave a mind blowing epistle on failure to a set of graduating students. “You will fail,” he said. “Accept it. You will lose. You will embarrass yourself. You will suck at something. If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying. So you got to get out there and give it your all. Never be discouraged. Never hold back. Give it everything you’ve got. And when you fall, fall forward.”

In the words of Michael Hyatt, “Don’t fear failure. Fear being in the exact same place next year as you are today.”

Remember, nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Never be discouraged. Never hold back. Give it everything you’ve got. And when you fall, fall forward.”
