There is a face lift you can perform on yourself that is guaranteed to improve your appearance. It is called a smile. A smile is one of the most underrated facial expressions in the world. I have seen ladies that spend so much time in front of the mirror making up and getting dressed for an outing. They emerge looking so attractive and mouth watering with their long flowing hair, smooth made up face and beautiful dress but when you look at them something even more important is missing. Something without which makes her look unfriendly, unapproachable, unconfident and unhappy. That’s her smile. She doesn’t realize what everyone knows: that the expression one wears on one’s face is far more important than the clothes one wears on one’s back.
People naturally assume that you only smile when you feel like it, only when things are going well for you or only when you are happy deep down. It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, during my ultimate search for fuel some days ago, I drove pass a family living in a room. From what I saw this family numbered about 5 or 6 children and all were living inside a room but the way they were playing and enjoying each other’s company, you could see that there were genuinely happy. On the other hand, there are hundreds and even thousands of people that can be considered rich, when I say rich I mean millionaires that have been so depressed that they committed suicide. An example of a man in this category is German billionaire Adolf Merckle who was the 94th richest man in the world before he committed suicide on January 5th 2009 by throwing himself in front of a train.
Every body in the world is seeking happiness – and there is one sure way to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn’t depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
Action seems to follow feeling, but really action and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not.
Your smile is a messenger of your good will. Your smile brightens the lives of all who see it. To someone who has seen a dozen people frown, scowl or turn their faces away, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds. Especially when that someone is under pressure from his bosses, his customers, his teachers or parents or children, a smile can help him realize that all is not hopeless – that there is joy in the world.
Whenever you go out-of-doors, draw the chin in, carry the crown of the head high, and fill the lungs to the utmost; drink in the sunshine; greet your friends with a smile, and put soul into every hand shake. Do not fear being misunderstood and do not waste a minute thinking about your enemies. Smile when you shake hands, smile no matter what, smile when you greet your colleagues in the morning. Smile when its tough, smile when its hell, smile no matter what.
Tom Walsh said that “every minute your mouth is turned down you lose 60 seconds of happiness”.
Paul Bourge also said that “unhappiness indicates wrong thinking, just as ill health indicates a bad regime”.
It is impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside. If you can laugh at it, you can live with it. Smile, it adds to your face value.
